Time for a quick nooner, tweeps. And I’ll hit a couple topics, including Stuart Holden, U.S. World Cup for Algeria, and the Chicago Fire.
As far as Holden, now it looks like the U.S. National Team midfielder is going on trial at Bolton instead of Burnley. And it has nothing to do with being wishy-washy.
He’s out of contract with MLS, so he can bolt Houston and sign with anybody he wants. He holds dual U.S. and British citizenship, making him more attractive to EPL teams. He initially flew to England to trial with Burnley, but after terrible weather and the departure of coach Owen Coyle aborted Holden’s trial, now he’s following Coyle to Bolton.
Bolton has a glaring need for pace and more coin to spend, so this may work out to be a better deal for Holden anyway. The 24-year-old is desperate to get some EPL playing time and force his way into U.S. coach Bob Bradley’s plans for this summer’s World Cup. Do you think he signs with Bolton? Will he make the World Cup?
*** Speaking of Africa, the African Cup of Nations resumed today with Ivory Coast playing Burkina Faso and Malawi taking on U.S. World Cup opponent Algeria. And Algeria has looked downright awful against set-pieces, which is a strength of the U.S. Clear favorites going into the game, they gave up a pair of set-piece scores and got crushed 3-0.
*** The Red Bulls aren’t the only MLS team unveiling their new coach this week. The Fire officially announced Carlos De Los Cobos Sunday, and unveiled him today in Chicago. You can watch it live right here.
He’ll fly to Florida tonight to watch what little bit is left of the combine tomorrow.
