NYC softball rankings
Not much has changed in the New York City softball hierarchy over the last few weeks.
Mary Louis was the team sending a few ripples with wins over St. Francis Prep and Archbishop Molloy. The Hilltoppers renter at No. 9. Tottenville, McKee/Staten Island Tech and St. John Villa all split two games at Mudville over the weekend. St. Joseph by the Sea picked up another signature win by taking down Molloy on Staten Island, but will need to take care of Moore this week to grab hold of its division.
Check below to see how this week’s rankings shaped up:
1.Tottenville (11-0) (Last week: 1)
The rain held off as Tottenville finished its toughest stretch of the season a perfect 4-0 with a 7-2 win over rival Susan Wagner to sit alone in first place in PSAL Staten Island A. Jillian Regan homered twice. The Pirates then traveled to Mudville and split two games losing the first 3-2 in eight innings to Brockport with Regan almost tying the game with a homer. They won 1-0 in the second against Sacred Heart of Buffalo.
Next: @ New Dorp (April 30, 4 p.m.)
2. St. Joseph by the Sea (6-0) (2)
The top of the Vikings orders was deadly in a 6-2 win over Molloy. Leadoff hitter Alexandra Prescia had two hits and drove in two runs and Lianna Jordan collected two sacrifice flies. Those wins are all well and good, but Sea will need to beat rival Moore Catholic on Thursday to put a stranglehold on CHSAA Staten Island.
Next: St. Joseph Hill (May 1, 4 p.m.)
3. Moore Catholic (6-1) (3)
Maxine Jasko is fulfilling all the preseason hype. The senior has knocked the cover off the ball since Day One and a win over St. Joseph Hill was no different. She went 2-for-3 with five RBIs. The Mavericks have a big week with games against St. John Villa and St. Joseph by the Sea ahead of them.
Next: @ St. John Villa (May 1, 4 p.m.)
4. Susan Wagner (10-1) (4)
The Falcons hit Tottenville ace Cheryl Lopez better than most teams this season, but struggled to put them together in a 7-2 loss to Pirates last week. Taylor Sarcone had three hits and Jennifer Greenberg was stellar defensively at first. Wagner will need to regroup quickly if it wants to keep pace. McKee/Staten Island Tech visits Monday.
Next: McKee/Staten Island Tech (April 30, 4:30 p.m.)
5. Preston (7-0) (5)
Megan Kelly and Julianna Orrico have become quite the tandem in the circle combining for shutouts for Cardinal Spellman and Good Counsel last week. Kelly also had a big day at the plate versus the Pilots, going 3-for-4, driving in a run and scoring three times. The tough non-leagues games have Preston rolling in league right now.
Next: Sacred Heart (May 1, 4:15 p.m.)
6. Archbishop Molloy (7-2) (6)
Molloy jumped on St. Joseph by the Sea early scoring two runs in the first inning and almost added a run in the third, but had a runner thrown out at the plate. The bats cooled down and the Stanners fell 6-2. It was their second straight loss after falling to Mary Louis on Friday. Not the way you’d like to go into a game against St. Francis Prep.
Next: @ No. 8 St. Francis Prep (April 30, 3:45 p.m.)
7. Construction (9-1) (7)
It hasn’t exactly been pretty defensively with Alicia Gonzalez no longer at short. Construction is still finding ways to win though. The bats carried them to an 11-7 victory against division rival Bryant. Delana Murray and Britney Rodriguez had three hits apiece. Coach Marco Migliaccio believes things will be much sharper before the playoffs.
Next: @ Grover Cleveland (May 2, 5 p.m.)
8. St. Francis Prep (6-3) (8)
Freshman Kelly Licul said it took her some time to get comfortable being a young player on the varsity. That period is over as she has developed into one of SFP’s most reliable hitters. She and her team will try to bounce back from a loss to Mary Louis by attempting to grab their second straight win when Molloy visits Monday.
Next: No. 6 Archbishop Molloy (April 30, 3:45 p.m.)
9. Mary Louis (6-5) (NR)
We welcome the Hilltoppers back to the rankings fresh off their best week of the season and probably best in the last seven years. TMLA beat both rivals St. Francis Prep and Archbishop Molloy, moving into third place in CHSAA Brooklyn/Queens. Shannon Minihane had a big day in the win over the Stanners.
Next: Christ the King (April 30, 3:45 p.m.)
10. McKee/Staten Island Tech (7-2) (10)
Ace Blayse Halvorsen allowed just three hits and struck out 10 in a win over New Dorp. The Seagulls then traveled to Mudville and split two games, losing to Brockport and picking up a 12-4 win over Proctor. It’s all in preparation for their second matchup with rival Wagner on Monday with second place on the line.
Next: @ Susan Wagner (April 30, 4 p.m.)
New: Mary Louis (3-4)
Dropped out: Fontbonne Hall (4-3)
On the bubble: Francis Lewis (9-2), Fontbonne Hall (5-6), James Madison (7-2), Cardozo (8-2), Bayside (9-1) and Fieldston (5-1).
