Domenec Torrent’s first two New York City FC signings came from around the world. His latest comes from around the corner.

NYCFC announced they have signed Queens midfielder Danny Bedoya following a successful trial from Premier Development League affiliate Long Island Rough Riders.

Bedoya, 24, had caught the eyes of Torrent and NYCFC after a midweek scrimmage between NYCFC and the Rough Riders on July 19, when he scored the lone goal for the Rough Riders in a 3-1 loss.

“He has a special quality to play in between the lines,” Torrent said in a press release. “His position is in between Maxi [Moralez] and Jesus [Medina], he has control all the time, and he understands soccer, which is very important for me. He’s a smart player. I’m sure 100 percent he’s able to help the team.”

The Colombian-born Bedoya previously had been a member of the Red Bulls academy before playing collegiate soccer at St. John’s University. After college, he signed with Red Bulls II in 2015, making 25 USL appearances across two seasons, before ultimately settling with the Rough Riders since 2017. He notched four goals and three assists across 21 appearances for the Rough Riders in the PDL.

Bedoya became the third player the club signed in the secondary transfer window, which closed Thursday. NYCFC have already received a return on loanee Valentin Castellanos, who scored in his debut in a 2-2 draw against Vancouver on Saturday.

Veteran Spanish midfielder Eloi Amagat, who joined as a free agent, participated in his first training sessions with the team earlier this week.

While searching for midfield help, Torrent said he wanted to add a center back after recent injuries. However, the club failed to add one defensive piece in the window, leaving Torrent with just three natural center backs: Alex Callens, Maxime Chanot and Sebastien Ibeagha.

The Rough Riders became an NYCFC PDL affiliate in 2016. The club was seeking to become a USL team in 2016, which could be a local option for NYCFC to store their reserve squad.
