It sure pays to be part of the City Football Group family.

New York City FC tapped into the motherland’s vast resources once again by strengthening their midfield — an area head coach Domenec Torrent wanted to address this transfer window — by acquiring 19-year-old attacking midfielder Valentin Castellanos on loan from Club Atletico Torque, a CFG team, for the remainder of 2018, the club announced Friday.

Castellanos joins NYCFC just days after the team acquired former Girona captain midfielder Eloi Amagat on a free-agent contract. Like Amagat, Castellanos has a team option for 2019.

Torrent described Castellanos as an exciting young midfielder who can play both centrally and out wide. He scored three times and assisted on as many in 19 matches with Atletico Torque in Uruguay’s top division.

“He has a lot of quality 1-v-1 and he has a lot of energy. He will improve our attacking, especially when the team wants to play a bit deeper and we want to get in behind,” Torrent said in a press release.

While Castellanos offers an intriguing option centrally up top, NYCFC hasn’t exactly addressed the absence of Yangel Herrera. Torrent told ProSoccerUSA after Thursday’s 2-0 win against Orlando City that Amagat isn’t a straight swap for Herrera but he brings needed experienced for NYCFC’s playoffs run.

As for Castellanos, he’s another intriguing young signing that NYCFC have started to target, making his 2019 purchase option a no-brainer for NYCFC. Prior to joining Atletico Torque, he progressed through Universidad de Chile academy. Danish club Brondby had been interested in signing the Argentine before Atletico Torque activated their buy-in clause following his year-long loan, according to El Grafico.

At Atletico Torque, he played with former NYCFC defender Javier Calle. The team also features defender Nahuel Ferraresi, who was rumored to join NYCFC this past off season.

The pair had trained with Manchester City last year.
