Catcher is the grunt position on a baseball field, the spot that yields black and blues and achy knees. This spring, however, it is glamorous because of New York City’s abundance of talent behind the plate.

We’ve got power hitters (George Washington’s Nelson Rodriguez, St. Francis Prep’s Chris Cannon and Riverdale’s Nat Irving), RBI men (Grand Street Campus’ Ernesto Lopez, Long Island City’s Edwin Saez and Tottenville’s Kevin Krause), defensive stalwarts (Poly Prep’s Marcus Hernandez and Regis’ Jake Kinsley) and draftable prospects (Rodriguez, Irving and Xaverian’s Elvin Soto). Of the nine, six — Soto (Pittsburgh), Kinsley (Furman), Cannon (Navy), Krause (Stony Brook), Irving (Virginia) and Hernandez (Bucknell) — have Division I colleges lined up.
