Brian Lissak and Columbia Prep proved they belong among the area’s top private schools, though the Lions’ season came to an end in the process.
Sixth-seeded Columbia Prep fell to No. 3 Poly Prep, 81-80, Thursday in Bay Ridge in the opening round of the NYSAISAA Class B tournament. Brian Lissak nearly carried the Lions (16-9) to victory, pouring in 47 points. Josh Mark and Matt Fischman had 10 apiece for the NYCAL champion, which led by 15 at one point.
“I’m happy that we had the opportunity, I’m happy we showed we belonged in the ‘B’ bracket,” Columbia Prep coach Ryan Petit. “This showed we can compete at that level, which is great for our school now, but also great for our school in the years to come. I’m just so proud of all my kids. It was an absolute great effort.”
Poly Prep (15-9) moves on to the ‘B’ semifinals, where it will face No. 2 Fieldston in The Bronx Friday at 5 p.m. Anthony Reyes led them with 22 points.
“We were down, as is our M.O., and we came back,” Poly Prep coach Bill McNally said. “It was definitely an interesting game. It was a game of runs.”
No. 4 Riverdale 58, No. 5 Dalton 49: Russell Johnson and Kyle Friedman each scored 14 points, Armando Perez had 10 points, Josh Wetzler grabbed eight rebounds and Henry Stevens had six points and eight assists for Riverdale (13-10), which takes on No. 1 Collegiate in the semifinals Friday at 5 p.m. at Trinity High School in Manhattan. Dalton’s season ends with a 13-12 record.
CLASS C
No. 1 Rye Country Day School 58, No. 8 Staten Island Academy 50: James Morisano had 22 points for SIA (18-8) and Michael Langford had nine in defeat. Jeff Grasso scored 14 points and Matt Staubi and Alex Gendelman each had 13 points for Rye, which hosts No. 5 Lawrence Woodmere in the semifinals Friday at 5 p.m.
No. 2 Packer 78, No. 7 Trevor Day School 70 OT: Ethan Feldman made 13-of-14 free throws and scored 40 points, including 17 in the fourth quarter, Jake Shapiro had 16 points and Nick Morton pulled down 17 rebounds for Packer, the ACIS champion which hosts rival St. Ann’s in the semifinals Friday at 5 p.m. and has won 20 straight games. Trevor Day finishes its season at 16-10.
No. 5 Lawrence Woodmere Academy 64, No. 4 Horace Mann 62 OT: Tristan Braverman sank a game-winning 3-pointer at the buzzer and scored 11 points, Trent Parrish had 23 points, 12 rebounds and six assists and Rokas Lapsys added 15 for Lawrence Woodmere (21-3), which faces No. 1 Rye Country Day in the semifinals Friday at 5 p.m. Schnepp poured in 37 points and grabbed 10 rebounds and Bernie Rawlins had 14 points for Horace Mann (8-14).
