OAK: I’D LOVE TO GO TO KNICKS
If the Bulls decide they want a quick divorce with from Charles Oakley, the ex-Knick harbors a desire to play for Jeff Van Gundy again.
Oakley was fined $50,000 for critical comments about Bulls coach Tim Floyd. Jeff Van Gundy still adores Oakley and Knicks management is monitoring the situation to see if GM Jerry Krause decides recent events are irreparable and decides to ship him.
The Suns have inquired and Indiana, Washington and Orlando may have interest, too. Krause wants to keep Oakley because he’s in the last year of his contract that pays him $7M. By letting him walk in the summer, the Bulls would be under the cap again.
A source close to Oakley says he’s dying to be shipped to either the Knicks or Nets.
“I have no control over where I’ll go,” Oakley told The Post yesterday. “I have to see what the Bulls want. Of course, I would like New York, [I’ve] got my businesses there, my friends and I understand Jeff will still be there. All I want to do is win a championship. You don’t rebuild in New York. They pay the money, they give a guy $100 million and don’t want [a] loser.”
The Knicks could offer one of their expendable point guards, Charlie Ward or Howard Eisley, and a throw-in player such as Travis Knight to match salaries. Though the Bulls could use a point, Ward has three years left on his contract and Eisley four.
“It would be nice to play for Jeff because he gives a lot,” said Oakley. “He can coach the game, he understands the game. All he wants is for you to work hard in practice and in games and not just talk about working hard.”
Van Gundy yesterday defended Oakley, who last week ripped Floyd for his substitution patterns and canceling a morning shootaround.
“I love Oak,” Van Gundy said. “I think Tim Floyd is a helluva coach. I think it’s a natural part of losing in this league, there’s going to be some confrontation. Oak and Tim Floyd have the same competitive spirit, which is what you want. In the end, they’ll be great for Chicago.
“Oak is a team guy,” Van Gundy added. “It may not always come through in his quotes. But he’s 100 percent about team.”
