NET NOTES

A distributor. A passer. An orchestrator. Those are the roles usually associated with a point guard. But when the PG is Jason Kidd, there is another role if necessary: scorer.

“Jason does a good job of getting others involved and he has a pretty good idea of what we need in certain situations,” said coach Byron Scott. “Jason wants to win. It if means giving up his body, that is what he is going to do.”

And if it means taking over the scoring, that is what he is going to do. Kidd did it again in Miami Friday night when he scored 33 points – his second 30-plus game in eight days – to enable the Nets to beat back the Heat before last night’s intriguing Meadowlands showdown with unbeaten Dallas.

“I had to do certain things at certain times,” said Kidd, averaging a team-high 20.9 points, but 27.0 in the five games before last night. “It’s just what’s there. “It’s what the game gives and what I have to do at certain times.”

Kenyon Martin (broken nose) was to be a game-time decision.

Jason Collins, who became the first rotation regular to miss a game with injury (left ankle sprain) when he sat in Miami, was expected back last night.

Nets were averaging 100.0 points at home, 91.5 on the road . . . Nets home vs. Denver tomorrow.

Scott, asked if he were interested in seeing how much weight Chris Childs has lost, replied, “I’m just interested to see him.”

Rodney Rogers has been in a dreadful shooting slump and while he has insisted all along he is patient and knows it will end, Scott admitted he saw and sensed frustration from the burly free- agent pickup during his 1-of-9 shooting in Miami. But one decided plus: Rogers did not quit on other parts of his game.

“He had a tough night shooting the ball,” said Scott, “and for the first time in nine games I saw a little frustration on his part. But he keeps playing and he keeps doing other things for us. The shots are going to come.”

Rogers, shooting .306 (19-of-62), averaged 4.3 rebounds and 2.56 assists in nine games.
