When Ommadon, winner of last year’s Nashua Stakes at the Big A, won his only start this year, taking a March 28 allowance mile in a sharp 1:35.3, trainer Tommy Walsh all but did back flips in the winner’s circle.

Predicting that Ommadon would improve “eight to nine lengths” in his next scheduled start, Saturday’s Wood Memorial at Aqueduct, Walsh warned that Florida Derby winner Monarchos, the heavy favorite for the Wood, was ripe for the picking.

Now Walsh will have to wait at least until the May 5 Kentucky Derby to see his boast come true. After bruising a foot last week and missing several days of training, Ommadon is out of the Wood. Instead, he’ll point for the April 21 Federico Tesio at Pimlico for his final Triple Crown prep.

Several Wood probables worked out recently.

Yesterday morning at Santa Anita, trainer Bob Baffert’s late-developing Congaree – stablemate of Point Given, the smashing winner of Saturday’s Santa Anita Derby – broke stopwatches sizzling six furlongs in 1:11.2, galloping out seven in 1:25.3. He’s flying East this morning.

Voodoo, third in the Gotham at Aqueduct three weeks ago, went an easy six furlongs in 1:18.3 yesterday over the Belmont training track.

“He probably went a little slower than we would have liked,” said trainer Jimmy Jerkens.
