PHOENIX — Seth Ryan has spent much of his life around football, watching his father coach in big games. Monday night, the roles will be reversed.
His father, former Jets and current Bills coach Rex Ryan, will be in the stands, and Seth will be on the field, Clemson’s holder and a backup wide receiver for the College Football Playoff national championship game against Alabama.
And, according to Seth, Rex is thrilled about it.
“He’s probably more excited than I am,” the 21-year-old said Saturday. “I’m trying to treat it like every other game. He’s always calling me, making sure I’m doing the right things, making sure I’m doing my extra film work and stuff like that. Watching him all the time, it was something I wanted to do. I’ve been on the sidelines since I was 11. I’m blessed to be a part of this.”
The 5-foot-11 Seth, a redshirt sophomore who attended high school in Summit, N.J. and joined Clemson as an invited walk-on, said 10 family members will be in attendance at the University of Phoenix Stadium as Clemson looks to win its second national championships and upset heavy-favorite Alabama. He may be able to hear the boisterous Rex, if the game goes right.
“He’s very vocal. I remember in high school games, you could hear him up in the stands yelling,” Seth said. “I might be able to hear him [on Monday], especially if we do extremely well.”
