I just shook hands with Bobby Murcer in the Yankees clubhouse.

He looks good, is in great spirits and to see him is one of the joys of Opening Day.

For those who can’t be here today, let me be your guide. I will update as the day goes on.

I walk into Yankee Stadium at 9:10, just ahead of Johnny Damon, who is wearing a suit. It must be Opening Day.

At 10:15, A-Rod heads out to take some extra hitting in the batting cage. Damon is coming back from the cage. The leadoff hitter is ready to go. The players are anxious to get going.

I see broadcaster Michael Kay. He is excited to see Murcer. “Bobby is just an amazing man, every time you talk to him, he makes you feel better,’’ Kay says. “The guy’s show of courage is tremendous.’’

At 12:42, Bob Sheppard offers these words, “Good afternoon, and welcome to Opening Day at Yankee Stadium.’’

Music to the ears.

Then came the introductions, the loudest ovations go to Don Mattingly, Melky Cabrera, that’s how much the fans love Melky, Mariano Rivera, Andy Pettitte (Welcome Home), Joe Torre, and Derek Jeter. A-Rod didn’t get booed, yet. Carl Pavano gets polite cheers.

Tarlier, Torre talked about a phone call he got from Bernie Williams, who would have gotten the biggest hand. “I know he wants to be here,’’ Torre says, “this is the place he is most comfortable.’’

The Yankees pay tribute to Cory Lidle as only the Yankees can in a touching ceremonial first pitch. Melanie Lidle goes to the mound with her young son Christopher, accompanied by Jason Giambi. Christopher, a lefty, throws a strike. Miguel Cairo and several other Yankees come over to comfort Melanie.

The Yankees take the field. We’ll update in a few innings.
