Look who’s awake again.
Robinson Cano has played most of this month in a haze after virtually carrying the Yankees’ lineup during Alex Rodriguez’s five-week absence, but the second baseman is returning to April form.
Then again, receiving a steady diet of meatballs from garbage pitchers for a few days can work wonders for plenty of hitters.
Whatever the case, Cano is pounding the baseball. He finished last night 3-for-4 with a homer and three RBIs, highlighting the Bombers’ offensive attack in their 7-4 victory over the putrid Orioles at the Stadium.
“I would say everything is coming together,” said Cano, whose Yankees have a nine-game winning streak for the first time in two years. “When you’re winning, you don’t have to worry about anything else.”
Cano is 8-for-15 (.533) over his past four games with two homers and six RBIs. Last night, he batted second for the first time all season, as Johnny Damon took a seat to rest his sore back.
“It was good, because I got a chance to see better pitches,” Cano said. “They threw me a lot of fastballs today.”
Few teams bring out Cano’s best like the Orioles. Even during a slump in which Cano’s batting average dropped from .378 to .296, he had four hits in 12 at-bats during a weekend series at Camden Yards.
In Wednesday’s 11-4 victory over Baltimore, Cano was also 3-for-4 with a homer.
Cano smacked an RBI double against Adam Eaton in the first inning last night before hitting a line-drive into the right-field seats in the second, a two-run homer that extended the Yankees’ lead to 6-0.
Though just three of Cano’s eight homers have come at the Stadium, he clearly enjoys the new digs.
“It’s a nice park, and I would say anyone would like to hit in this ballpark,” Cano said.
