The Orioles didn’t hit much in the ALDS against the Yankees, so they’re apparently looking to upgrade their offense in a big way.

Baltimore is targeting free agent Josh Hamilton to play left field and give the team a big bat in the middle of the order, according to FoxSports.com. Hamilton, who hit .285 with 43 home runs and 128 RBIs this season with the Rangers, is the top position player available.

Hamilton’s prowess at the plate is not in doubt, but he has a ton of red flags, including his injury history and past substance abuse problems. At 31, Hamilton also might not get a long-term contract.

Baseball Prospectus has reported that Hamilton will ask for a seven-year, $175 million contract. That might be unlikely for the Orioles, who had a payroll less than $85 million this season.
