Carrying a time bomb in his chest, Ranger winger Jed Ortmeyer is still aiming to be ready for training camp next month.

The 27-year-old yesterday was listed as out indefinitely by the Rangers after he was diagnosed with a pulmonary embolism, a blood clot in the main artery between the heart and lungs. Left untreated, the extremely dangerous condition could lead to a heart attack or stroke.

Ortmeyer is expected to undergo tests today to determine if his embolism can be treated with drugs rather than surgery.

“It’s under control and he will be in the process of getting ready for training camp,” agent Peter Fish said.

Ortmeyer had been working out at the Rangers’ Westchester training facility. On Thursday night, upon returning home, he experienced pain and began coughing up blood. He was briefly hospitalized.

Once the clots are dissolved, physicians are likely to explore their causes and whether they’re likely to return. The green light to resume his career may wait until doctors are sure they’re not likely to recur.

Ortmeyer re-signed with the Rangers as a restricted free agent on July 18, a deal worth 552G for the coming season.
