Paralyzed Rutgers lineman Eric LeGrand is responsive at times and acutely aware of the tough road to recovery that lies ahead, according to Scarlet Knights coach Greg Schiano. But there were no updates Tuesday on the eve of the 72-hour window that doctors say may give the first indication of LeGrand’s long-term situation.

“He has different periods because of the medication. He’s been very responsive at times. He knows. I’ve tried to keep him informed of what’s going on here,” Schiano said of LeGrand, 20, who underwent delicate decompression surgery Saturday night after suffering a spinal injury in Saturday’s win over Army.

Surgeons at Hackensack University Medical Center acknowledged that they’d need to wait 72 hours to know the full extent of the damage.

“In the end, it really boils down to this: Nobody really knows,” Schiano said. “I do know this: … your prayers matter and all our prayers matter, and that we believe that Eric is going to recover. That’s our approach and that’s his approach.

“We’re going to take it one step at a time. We’re not naïve to the fact that it is a long road. One step at a time we’re going to do this thing, and we’re going to do it as a family, the LeGrand family and the Rutgers football family and that is the way we are going to approach it.”
