‘PEGASUS’ BREEZES IN WORKOUT
Kentucky Derby and Wood Memorial winner Fusaichi Pegasus breezed seven furlongs on the main track yesterday morning in 1:28 1/5 with exercise rider Andy Durnin up. He worked in company with Bodyguard and finished five lengths ahead of him.
“I thought he worked very well,” trainer Neil Drysdale said. “He looked happy and was just cruising along.”
Drysdale has not confirmed when the colt will start next. He is nominated to Saturday’s Grade 2 $150,000 Jerome at one mile, exclusively for three-year-olds.
“Saturday is a possibility,” Drysdale said. “It depends on the weather and how the horse comes out of the work. I don’t have a set plan with him. The only plan we have is to get him to the Breeders’ Cup.”
1st RACE – Two Chiefs was entered on Saturday in an allowance race, but scratched to run in this claiming event. He pressed the early pacesetter He’s a Charm and was on even terms entering the stretch. He took the lead at the sixteenth pole and edged away for the victory. Ruby Hill was far back early and raced wide throughout. He put in a belated run in the stretch to finish fourth.
2nd RACE – Straight A rated off the pace but then started a good run on the far turn while racing on the rail. He had to check slightly turning for home as the opening on the rail became narrow. He then found room to go through and finished well to be second.
3rd RACE – Pompeii set the pace while being pressed by Miss Sabrina. On the far turn Pompeii edged away and drew off in the stretch for an easy victory. Kris Pit, making her first start since being involved in a morning workout accident that killed another horse, closed well from last to gain the place spot.
4th RACE – Lorraine’s Memory rated off the pace while on the rail but had to check on the backstretch. She then had to check entering the far turn when Totally Private was leaning on her. She checked again on the far turn and Jorge Chavez was literally standing up straight on her to hold her back form running up on the heels of pacesetting Border Fire. In the stretch she was able to angle outside and finally get running room. She closed well on the rail to gain the place spot. After the race, Richard Migliore took off the rest of his mounts because he had pain and swelling in his right arm. He will be checked out by a physican today.
10th RACE – Apt Contender was bothered at the start but recovered quickly to stalk the early pace. He eased his way through traffic to reach contention but then tired in the stretch drive. Alarm Code raced wide throughout and was battling for the lead with Electra Q Shun at the top of the stretch. But he tired in the stretch to be second. Favored Son set the pace but had nothing left by the time the field entered the stretch. He doesn’t want to go past six furlongs.
