Former Mets pitching coach Rick Peterson is back in some very familiar company after landing the same job with the Brewers yesterday.
Peterson, who replaces interim pitching coach Chris Bosio, will be reunited in Milwaukee with two of his former managers in bench coach Willie Randolph and manager Ken Macha.
Peterson, 54, was Randolph’s pitching coach with the Mets for 3½ seasons after filling the same role under Macha with Oakland in 2003. Brewers GM Doug Melvin cited Peterson’s adherence to biomechanics — the study of forces exerted by muscles and gravity on the skeletal structure — as one of the main reasons for the hiring. Milwaukee’s staff was beset by injury this season.
“This is what I’ve done all my entire life — maximize performance and reduce the risk of injury,” Peterson told The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel yesterday. “If we get the pitching turned around and the rest of the team does what it did this year, this team can win.”
Peterson was out of baseball this season, as he focused on a biomechanics consultancy in New Jersey called 3pSports in conjunction with Tom Glavine, Al Leiter and Dr. James Andrews, the noted sports orthopedic surgeon.
