PHIL TO PLAY NEXT WEEK
Phil Mickelson, who has been out of action since his heartbreaking U.S. Open loss at Bethpage last month, announced he will return to PGA Tour competition next week at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational at Firestone Country Club in Akron, Ohio.
Mickelson has been taking time off to be with his wife, Amy, who has been fighting breast cancer. Shortly before Amy was to have surgery on July 1, Mickelson found out his mother, Mary, also was diagnosed with the disease.
Mickelson, who has won twice this year, including the WGC-CA Championship at Doral, has not played since his runner-up finish at the U.S. Open. His return virtually ensures that he’ll play the PGA Championship in two weeks.
