Derek Lowe took a no-hitter into the seventh inning, and the Braves won their sixth straight game, beating the Phillies 5-0 last night in Philadelphia despite Cliff Lee’s 16 strikeouts.
Shane Victorino singled to start the seventh for the first hit off Lowe, and Placido Polanco followed with a double. The right-hander then came out of the game with an apparent leg or foot injury.
Lowe (3-3) appeared to hurt himself in the top of the seventh after singling and going to second on Chipper Jones’ single.
Lee (2-3) set the major league high for strikeouts this season, coming within one of the franchise record. The big league mark for a nine-inning game is 20.
In other news, the Phillies placed pitcher Roy Oswalt on the 15-day disabled list because he has an injured back.
Twins 9, Red Sox 2
In Boston, Trevor Plouffe hit his first homer of the season and Scott Baker (2-2) pitched eight strong innings to lead the Twins.
Red Sox manager Terry Francona was ejected in the second inning after Tim Wakefield (0-1) was called for a balk. Wakefield allowed eight runs, six earned, and nine hits in 4 1/3 innings.
Rays 6, Orioles 2
In Baltimore, James Shields pitched three-hit ball into the eighth inning and Brandon Guyer homered in his first big league at-bat to propel the Rays.
Blue Jays 7, Tigers 4
In Toronto, Adam Lind homered and Jesse Litsch struck out a career-high nine to lead the Blue Jays.
Nationals 3, Marlins 2
In Miami, Adam LaRoche hit a tiebreaking sacrifice fly in the top of the 10th and the Nationals escaped a jam in the bottom of the inning to break a three-game losing streak.
Giants 4, Rockies 3
In San Francisco, Freddy Sanchez singled home the winning run off Felipe Paulino in the ninth inning, giving the Giants a victory over the Rockies on a night when San Francisco celebrated Willie Mays’ 80th birthday.
