PLAYING BY HALVES
JET REPORT CARD
QUARTERBACKS: C+
Chad Pennington (19-26, 183 yards, 2 TDs, 1 INT) played well but he wasn’t able to spark and move the team when it needed him most in the second half.
RUNNING BACKS: C-
Curtis Martin (18-65, rushing, 4-39 receiving) ran well in the first half (9-46), but was stifled in the second half.
WIDE RECEIVERS: C-
It all looked good for Laveraneus Coles (5-61, 1 TD), Santana Moss (2-23) and Wayne Chrebet (4-40, 1 TD) in the first half. However, they combined for only four receptions for 28 yards in the ill-fated second half.
TIGHT ENDS: D
Anthony Becht (1-4) had a high pass graze off his hands for an INT. The blocking, too, wasn’t up to his standard.
OFFENSIVE LINE: D
J.P. Machado had a big part in allowing a game-turning sack and forced fumble. Overall, the run blocking was inconsistent.
DEFENSIVE LINE: D
Four inexcusable offside penalties by DE John Abraham, NT Jason Ferguson and DE Shaun Ellis. Browns QB Tim Couch had too much time to throw.
LINEBACKERS: D
Sam Cowart (10 solo tackles) had his best game as a Jet. Running game was stopped, but the Browns completed too many short pass plays.
SECONDARY: D
CB Aaron Beasley and FS Damien Robinson were beaten on the Browns’ game-tying two-point conversion. Group failed to produce any takeaways.
SPECIAL TEAMS: B
Moss had a 63-yard punt return for a TD and looked dynamic averaging 25.8 yards on four returns. Kick and punt coverage was good. Nick Ferguson had a costly holding penalty before the final drive.
KICKING GAME: D
K John Hall had a 44-yard FG attempt blocked with 16 seconds remaining on a kick that looked low. P Matt Turk averaged 39.8 yards on four punts, but failed to get his most important one inside the 20 in the fourth quarter.
COACHING: D
Herman Edwards had a premonition at halftime despite having the lead, but his players obviously didn’t listen intently enough. Offensive coordinator Paul Hackett seemed to go into a shell with his play-calling in the second half.
