The Post’s high school staff looks ahead to the most intriguing matchups in boys basketball and girls basketball for the week of April 30 through May 6.
BASEBALL
Tottenville @ New Dorp (Monday, 4 p.m.)
A 28th straight PSAL Staten Island A title was uncertain when Tottenville was issued three forfeits for using players not on the active roster. The Pirates, however, haven’t lost since and are tied atop the division in the loss column with New Dorp entering play. Coach Tom Tierney’s club won the first meeting, 4-1 on Apr. 2, but it was one of the three wins taken away. Monday’s victory will count – whoever prevails.
Iona Prep vs. St. Raymond (Tuesday, 4 p.m. @ Ravens Field)
Up until Sunday, St. Raymond was one of the hottest teams in the city, winners of seven straight games – most of them in impressive fashion. Fordham Prep ended the Ravens’ run, but they have still put their name up there among city title contenders. Iona Prep was once on that list, but after falling to 4-4, the Gaels have serious work to do – starting here.
Fieldston @ Poly Prep (Wednesday, 4:30 p.m.)
The top spot and very possibly the league title will be on the line Wednesday in Bay Ridge. If Fieldston prevails, not only will the Eagles be all alone atop the division, but have the tiebreaker over five-time champion Poly Prep as they rallied for a 8-7, 10-inning victory in the first meeting on Apr. 13. Fieldston, in fact, is the only Ivy team to beat Poly during the regular season in the last seven years.
Cardinal Spellman vs. All Hallows (Friday, 4 p.m. @ Heritage Field)
Both teams have been the victim of a very tough schedule. Spellman lost last week to Fordham Prep, St. Raymond and St. Joseph by the Sea in a span of five days, the latter a 1-0, extra-inning loss to Sea. All Hallows had a similar slate early in the season, but has now rebounded, the latest proof a 3-2 win over Archbishop Stepinac on Saturday.
Beacon vs. Norman Thomas (Friday, 4 p.m. @ Central Park)
Two division leaders clash in a PSAL Manhattan crossover contest with playoff seeding implications. Beacon is in good shape in Manhattan A West, two games up on Stuyvesant, but Norman Thomas is locked in a dead heat with George Washington in Manhattan A East.
SOFTBALL
Susan Wagner vs. McKee/Staten Island Tech (Monday, 4 p.m. @ Great Kills LL)
Wagner has a chance to bounce back from the loss last week to Tottenville by beating McKee/Staten Island Tech, which currently sits in third place in PSAL Staten Island A. The Falcons need this one to keep the hope of winning a division title alive. MSIT will be chomping at the bit to pick up its first signature win of the season.
St. Francis Prep vs. Archbishop Molloy (Monday, 3:45 p.m. @ Cunningham Park)
The Stanners won the first two meetings by pulling away late. The Terriers bats were quiet until the late innings and a win would boost their confidence against their rivals going into the playoffs. Molloy, on the other hand, needs a victory to stop a two-game skid and get the defending Catholic state champions back on track.
Poly Prep @ Fieldston (Wednesday, 4 p.m.)
Not in the conversation about the Ivy League’s top teams before the season, Fieldston has gotten off to a red-hot start with a 5-1 record. Kate Miller is the best position player in the city and even pitched in a win over Horace Mann on Wednesday. Poly Prep, though, is coming off a big win of its won, Saturday against Riverdale.
St. Joseph by the Sea @ Moore Catholic (Wednesday, 4 p.m.)
Sea has established itself as the team to beat, coming off a 6-2 win over Archbishop Molloy. It took down the Mavericks 4-1 in the first meeting and will try to cool down their bats again. Maxine Jasko and Co. need this win to keep their hopes of winning a CHSAA Staten Island crown alive.
Bayside @ Cardozo (Thursday, 4 p.m.)
Bayside has just won loss and it came in its league opener against Cardozo. Since then, the Commodores have reeled off nine straight victories and they really have the Judges in their crosshairs to get revenge. Cardozo, on the other hand, has still had a pretty strong season despite the controversial dismissal of longtime coach Larry Alberts (inappropriate language).
LACROSSE
Riverdale @ Dalton (boys) (Monday, 4:30 p.m.)
Riverdale enters the game coming off a big win over Poly Prep where Davis Goldstein and Dan Maffezzoli each scored twice. The Falcons will be looking for revenge. Dalton won the first meeting 7-5 to open the season and will look to grab another victory to vault the Tigers into the Ivy League standings.
Midwood @ Tottenville (girls) (Tuesday, 5 p.m.)
Two of the PSAL’s top teams squared off with first place on the line. Tottenville is riding a five-game winning streak and beat the Hornets 13-11 in overtime in their first meeting. Midwood will be trying to string wins together after being upset by Hunter.
Iona Prep @ Fordham Prep (boys) (Friday, 5:30 p.m.)
These two never play a dull game. The last time these two teams met Fordham rallied from a five-goal deficit to win 11-10 in overtime in New Rochelle. Iona Prep has now lost four straight times to its rivals and Billy Trizano. Shane Fee and Co. will be looking to buck that trend.
