The Post high school staff takes a look at the top performers in boys basketball and girls basketball from the week of April 2.
BASEBALL
Connor Doyle, Cardozo
The Townsend Harris transfer played a major role in Cardozo’s 5-4 upset of George Washington on Saturday. He tripled, scored once and picked up the save with three dominant innings of relief in which he struck out seven. Doyle also had four RBIs and scored two runs in a pair of lopsided league victories over John Bowne earlier in the week.
Julian Lanfranco, Xaverian
It was a gigantic first week of the season for the speedy second baseman. Lanfranco had two hits and three runs scored against Long Island City in Monroe Tournament pool play Saturday and also had three hits in a league-opening victory over Bishop Ford.
Kevin Martir, Grand Street Campus
He began the week with two hits, a home run and three RBIs in a 15-0 rout of Brooklyn Tech and the Maryland-bound catcher added four hits and seven RBIs in Saturday’s 14-2 blistering of Curtis in Monroe Tournament pool play.
Tim McCarthy, Iona Prep
Gaels coach Fred Gallo removed McCarthy after five innings and 72 pitches because of how early it is in the spring. But McCarthy already did damage, giving up just one run on four hits with six strikeouts in an impressive, 10-2 win over All Hallows
Armando Perez, Riverdale
The three-sport star had a huge game in Riverdale’s first win of the year. Perez, a speedy outfielder who also plays football and basketball at the Bronx private school, drilled a two-run homer, stole home and scored twice to lead the Falcons past ACIS power St. Ann’s last Thursday.
SOFTBALL
Heidi Gomez, Bayside
Gomez drove in three runs and gave up just a single run in a massive, 6-1 win over rival Francis Lewis on Tuesday. The sophomore didn’t walk a batter and trusted her defense to make the plays behind her to excellent results – she’s definitely a budding star.
Lianna Jordan, St. Joseph by the Sea
Jordan has been stellar to start the season. The junior tossed her second shutout against one of the city’s top squads, blanking Preston in a 3-0 win. Jordan allowed three hits, three walks and struck out seven.
Sara Land, Horace Mann
One of the fastest players in the Ivy League got off to an impressive start Wednesday against Trinity. Land had six stolen bases, three hits, two RBIs and two runs scored in her first varsity softball game after not playing the sport last year – not too shabby.
Alyssa Paolicelli, Mary Louis
Coach Ginny Peiser called her the catalyst and Paolicelli was certainly that in a big win over Fontbonne Hall. The second baseman went 3-for-5 with three runs scored and had a two-run single. She also turned two double plays.
Victoria Slavik, James Madison
The St. Francis Prep transfer certainly looked right at home against Telecommunications. She smashed two home runs and collected a triple while driving in five runs. Coach Brian Freidman called it the best she’s hit with power on the young season.
LACROSSE
Ben Andreycak, Fordham Prep
The All-American attack played like one in the Rams’ biggest game to date. He scored five goals, including the tying score, and handed out three assists. Fordham Prep rallied from five goals down to beat rival Iona Prep.
Jessica Dahldorf, Poly Prep
Speaking of the city’s top player’s the Northwestern-bound Dahldorf didn’t disappoint. She scored four goals and dished out two assist. The senior gave the Blue Devils their first lead early in the fourth quarter in an emotional 13-12 win over Riverdale.
Taylor O’Gara, Curtis
Curtis’ undoubted leader was clutch when it mattered most. O’Gara scored five times in an 11-9 win over Tottenville. She had a goal and two assists on the Warriors last three scores as they rebounded from a loss to Midwood.
