The Post high-school staff takes a look at the top performers in boys basketball and girls basketball from the week of Jan. 16.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Jaequan Brown, Wings Academy
Despite battling the flu and a 103-degree temperature, the 6-foot-3 Rice transfer produced all week for Wings in three tight victories. The stretch began with Brown posting 15 points, eight rebounds and four assists in a 55-53 road win over John F. Kennedy. It continued with the versatile small forward adding 11 points, 11 rebounds, four steals, three assists and two blocks in a come-from-behind, 53-49 victory at Eagle Academy. And he capped the performance by scoring 14 points and grabbing eight rebounds as Wings topped Wadleigh, 59-57, on Friday.
Dillon Burns, Xaverian
The 5-foot-8, C.W. Post-bound guard led Xaverian to its biggest win of the year, a 76-70 upset of Christ the King, with 33 points on Sunday. He also had 16 points on Tuesday in a disappointing 61-58 loss to Mount St. Michael.
Anthony Libroia, Holy Cross
Want to know why the sharpshooting senior guard was off early in the season? Libroia was waiting for his SAT score to come back and now that it has – he’s a Division I and II qualifier – he’s gone back to ripping the nets like most knew he can, including four 3-pointers and 15 points against St. Francis Prep on Friday night.
Jameik Riviere, August Martin
August Martin went 3-0 last week and Riviere, its talented point guard, deserves much of the credit. He poured in 42 points on Sunday in leading the Falcons to a 73-62 victory over Leon Goldstein in the PSAL Class B Showcase. The junior also had 23 points in a 69-53 win over Townsend Harris on Thursday and added 26 points on Tuesday as the Queens school topped Robert H. Goddard, 65-39.
Ryan Yearwood, Cardozo
The 6-foot-7 swingman, who transferred to Cardozo from St. John’s Prep in the fall, enjoyed his best week of the year. Yearwood had 19 points, 11 rebounds and three assists in Thursday’s 78-56 rout of rival Campus Magnet and also posted 13 points and 11 rebounds in an 88-50 blowout of Flushing as the Judges remained atop Queens AA with two league contests remaining.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Christina (Speedy) Barone, Tottenville
The elusive junior point guard had 10 assists against Port Richmond on Thursday and then cut through the Lab Museum United defense like a knife Saturday at the PSAL ‘A’ Girls Basketball Showcase. Barone doesn’t score a ton, but she makes the Tottenville offense go with penetration and expert passing.
Sierra Calhoun, Christ the King
Calhoun continues to show why she has limitless potential. The sophomore star carried her team with 26 points in tight loss to Archbishop Molloy. Versus Mary Louis she was downright dominant on both ends of the floor, tallying 19 points and grabbing 16 rebounds in a much-needed win.
Madison Gordon, Horace Mann
The senior guard didn’t think scoring 1,000 points was a possibility to her. Since then she has been one of the Ivy League’s top players and accomplished the feat Friday. Gordon scored exactly the 13 points she needed and hit the milestone on a free throw in the third quarter against Dalton.
Christina Rubin, Moore Catholic
Rubin will tell you that shooters shoot and she did plenty of that this week. The Iona-bound sniper started the week by pouring in a career-high 33 points on seven 3-pointers against Maria Regina, then hit four treys and had 26 points versus Cardinal Spellman and capped it off with 20 points as Moore beat St. John Villa.
Maya Wasowicz, Beacon
Scoring 1,000 points has become a common occurrence throughout the city, but 1,500 is another matter. Wasowicz, the strong, 5-foot-9 wing, completed the phenomenal feat Wednesday against West 50th Street Campus, extending her Beacon career record.
