The Post high-school staff takes a look at the top performers in boys basketball and girls basketball from the week of May 21.
BASEBALL
Julian Lanfranco, Xaverian
The senior second baseman has been the sparkplug all season for Xaverian. Lanfranco ripped an RBI double in the seventh inning to get the Clippers within 2-1 of Fordham Prep in a win Saturday and had another two-run double Sunday against St. Raymond in the CHSAA seeding tournament.
Randy Perez, James Monroe
In Monroe’s two playoff wins this week, Perez alternated between starring as a pitcher and a hitter. He struck out seven and allowed just two hits in 5-2/3 innings in a playoff-opening, 8-0 win over Curtis and two days later homered, drove in three runs and scored four runs in a 9-4 victory over William Bryant.
Fernelys Sanchez, George Washington
A few months off didn’t hamper Fernelys Sanchez one bit. The talented senior outfielder, who returned to the field this week after fracturing his fibula, led George Washington to an 11-1 win over New Dorp with two hits, three runs scored and four RBIs in the second round of the PSAL Class A playoffs. Two days before, in an 8-0 shutout of John Bowne, he doubled, scored a run and drove in one.
Chris Sholkoff, Cardinal Spellman
Against St. John’s-bound ace Nick DiLeo of Xavier, Sholkoff brought his ‘A’ game. The senior right-hander tossed a complete-game two-hitter with seven strikeouts to lead Spellman to a 1-0 win in the CHSAA Class AA second round Wednesday.
Andrew Zapata, Poly Prep
The junior right-hander pitched Poly Prep to its second straight NYSAISAA crown on Wednesday, allowing just one hit and striking out 12 in a 4-2 win over Fieldston. He retired 13 of the final 14 batters he faced and the only one who reached – Matt Guzman – did so after striking out on a pitch in the dirt.
SOFTBALL
Kristy Colangelo, St. Joseph by the Sea
The ball off Preston left fielder Madeline Giannini’s bat and if it landed the Panthers would have won their first CHSAA Archdiocesan championship. Colangelo would have none of that, sliding to make one of the most dramatic catches of the season to seal Sea’s sixth title in eight years.
Mia Farinelli, Horace Mann
The senior ace is hitting her stride at the right time. Farinelli gave up just two runs on two hits with four strikeouts to lead Horace Mann to an 8-2 upset win over rival Fieldston in the NYSAISAA semifinals Wednesday after being run-ruled by the Eagles twice during the season.
Victoria Goldbach, Archbishop Molloy
The senior was the Stanners savior in Game 2 of the CHSAA Brooklyn/Queens championship. Goldbach, who won Game 1, came on in relief of Maria Palmeri and threw 4-1/3 innings of scoreless relief, giving the Molloy bats a chance to rally for a fourth straight title.
Jillian Giuffre, Tottenville
The senior outfielder came up big when her team needed it most, after falling behind 1-0 to Construction in the semifinals. Giuffre collected two hits, including a two-run single in a four-run third inning, and made a running catch in left to help lead Tottenville to a win.
Chasity Quinones, Morris
In a season of impressive success, rising up from the No. 9 seed to reach the PSAL Class B final, Morris has Quinones to thank. The sophomore was 2-for-4 with three RBIs and gave up four runs on four hits in seven innings to lead the Bulldogs to a 9-4 win over Brookyln Tech in the semis.
LACROSSE
Mark Rini, Monsignor Farrell
An injury kept Mark Rini off the field for most of last season’s title-game loss to Mount St. Michael. This time he made sure there was a different outcome. Rini scored five goals, including the game winner in the Falcons’ NYCHSAA Class A championship game victory against Stepinac.
Ross Schnitzer, Iona Prep
The Gaels needed one more defensive stand to seal the NYCHSAA title against rival Fordham Prep. Schnitzer provided it. He knocked free a bobbled pass, scooped it up and ran downfield in the final seconds. It helped Iona fully exorcise the demons from last season.
Luke Wooters, Iona Prep
Following Iona’s comeback win over Fordham Prep, Wooters came back to the sidelines and with a smile said, “I like championships.” He was a big reason for this one. The Nazareth-bound attack had four goals and three assists, including two goals and two assists late in the fourth quarter.
