FOOTBALL
Najee Champagne, Boys & Girls
The senior running back had 108 yards on just eight carries and a pair of rushing touchdowns in a 32-14 win Sunday over Truman. Champagne also popped for another two scores through the air from Keon Marsh, a career performance for the junior.
Najae Brown, Mount St. Michael
Brown hasn’t been at this quarterback thing long – just four games as a starter – but he is starting to get the hang of it. The senior ran for four touchdowns in Mount’s big 43-0 win over Holy Cross. and added an interception in the end zone to start a day of eight takeaways for the Mountaineers’ opportunistic defense.
Augustus Edwards, Tottenville
The junior running back asked for the ball in overtime and he got it, rushing five times, capped by a 2-yard game-winning touchdown against Port Richmond. Edwards had 122 yards on the ground, ran for another touchdown and also caught a TD pass from Brandon Barnes in the victory.
Wayne Morgan, Erasmus Hall
The All-American quarterback/safety ran for 144 yards and had touchdown runs of 90 and 54 yards in Erasmus Hall’s 50-8 rout of Lehman on Sunday. He also had a sack and forced a fumble, resulting in a touchdown, and threw for three two-point conversions.
Trey Solomon, Xavier
Overshadowed in the first half by DeQuan June of Cardinal Hayes, Solomon led his team to a 33-32 coemback victory with two big scoring runs after halftime. The sophomore finished with 214 yards on 26 carries as Xavier’s primary ball handler in the absence of Brent Scardapane (concussion).
BOYS SOCCER
Ibrahim Diaby, Martin Luther King
The brilliantly technical attacking midfielder returned this week from an abdominal strain and scored four goals. He had one in a victory over upstate power Newburgh Free Academy, added two more in Wednesday’s 5-0 shutout of Lab Museum and scored again in Saturday’s 3-1 come-from-behind win over Long Island dynamo St. John the Baptist.
Christian Molano, St. Francis Prep
Known more for being a rock on defense, the senior sweeper had two goals Tuesday against Regis, including a ridiculous, curling 30-yard set piece. Thursday he returned to his blue-collar defensive role in St. Francis Prep’s 2-0 shutout of rival Archbishop Molloy.
Edwin Zosayas, Curtis
He posted back-to-back hat tricks in impressive routs of CSI/McCown and rival Tottenville and now has a PSAL Staten Island A-leading 12 goals.
GIRLS SOCCER
Wendy Avendano, St. Francis Prep
The Terriers won twice last week and the senior striker was a big reason for that success. Avendano tallied two goals and two assists in a 4-2 win over St. Dominic. She also added a second-half goal in a 2-1 victory against Holy Trinity.
Gabby Davis, LaGuardia
The senior defensive midfielder isn’t known for her goal scoring. But in one of LaGuardia’s biggest games of the season, she recorded a rare hat trick a a 4-2 victory over Bard, which ensures the Athletics at least a second-place finish in PSAL Manhattan A-II.
Pamela Wishart, Leon Goldstein
The star junior would not let her team be denied. Wishart scored four goals, including two in the second half, to ensure a 6-4 win over New Utrecht after the Utes won the first meeting, 7-0. The Dolphins have won three of their last four.
GIRLS VOLLEYBALL
Mary Claire Bartlett, Brearley
Her tip in the fourth set of an eventual victory Wednesday over Chapin was almost cruel – Bartlett had been putting the ball down time after time only to completely catch the defense off guard at a key juncture. The junior outside hitter finished with 23 kills – and 32 percent of her team’s points – in the victory.
Tiffany Intravaia, St. Joseph Hill
The junior has really made the setter position her own after moving there full time midway through last season. Intravaia had 25 assists and 19 service points to lead two-time CHSAA Staten Island champion Hill to a sweep of rival St. Joseph by the Sea on Tuesday.
Elissa Shiau, Bronx Science
So much for a sophomore slump. One of the city’s best setters, Shiau has been outstanding this season for PSAL title contending Science – the latest example a most valuable player performance Saturday at her team’s host tournament after compiling 22 assists in the finals versus rival John F. Kennedy.
