The Post’s boys volleyball beat writer Marc Raimondi takes a look at some of the city’s top players – and who you should keep an eye on in the coming months.
S Jerry Henriquez, Bronx Science
Last year was his first running the Bronx Science show and now, with almost the entire core back, Henriquez has a chance to be the best setter in the city as a junior. A Post All-City honorable mention selection, the 6-footer has the size, athleticism and hands to make a major impact for Science.
OH Tyler Gaugler, Cardozo
Each of the last four years, a PSAL boys volleyball team with a Gaugler on it has won the city title: oldest brother Todd won twice with Cardozo, youngest Tyler won the following year and last year Troy – the middle brother – won with Bryant. Tyler, a junior, will try to keep that string going in 2012.
OH Michal Kasza, Academy of American Studies
As a sophomore, he helped lead Academy of American Studies to its best season ever, including a run to the PSAL boys volleyball city championship match. With a year of club volleyball under his belt at AllStarr, Kasza, one of the most dynamic outsides in the city, wants to go a step further.
MH Tom McLaughlin, Regis
Billy Carballeira and John Flanagan have graduated, which means McLaughlin is the one who has to put the ball down this season on a consistent basis. The senior captain has the ability to do just that as Regis tries to win an impressive third CHSAA city title in four years.
L Godwin Sequeira, Bryant
While everyone wanted to talk about the power and athleticism of Post All-City Player of the Year Troy Gaugler last year, coach Steve Hagenlocher continuously pointed to Sequeira as a reason for his team’s success. Well, it’ll be the senior libero’s team now as Bryant tries to win a second straight PSAL title.
