United States star Landon Donovan took a jab at Qatar on Twitter Thursday after the Middle Eastern country was awarded the hosting rights to the 2022 World Cup.

Less than two hours after the LA Galaxy striker posted a tweet congratulating Russia and Qatar for their successful 2018 and 2022 bids, respectively, Donovan pondered whether Qatar even had a national team.

“I have an idea..we play Qatar in a friendly(they can even host it), and the winner gets to host the 2022 WC..wait, do they even have a team?” Donovan wrote.

President Barack Obama said FIFA made the “wrong decision” following the surprising announcement. Qatar trumped bid-favorites U.S. and Australia, along with bids from South Korea and Japan.

FIFA president Sepp Blatter announced the winners Thursday after a secret ballot of the body’s 22 executive committee members. The decision suggested FIFA’s members were convinced the immensely wealthy state could control conditions amid the brutal summer climate, while delivering a high-quality event. Qatar’s bid team pledged, to some skepticism, that it would air-condition every stadium during the tournament. FIFA currently ranks Qatar’s national soccer team 113th, while the US sits 24th.
