Of the four teams to make the PSAL Cup playoffs last year, just one moved up: Lafayette. So far, that seems like the right decision.
John Rodriguez was 6-of-11 for 182 yards and threw three touchdowns to lead the Patriots to a 28-14 win over Jamaica in PSAL Bowl division football Sunday. All three scoring strikes went to Ronnie Scott.
Gregory Lenord had a rushing touchdown, Kazon Edwards had a sack, Anthoney Blake picked off a pass and Jeremiah Navarro recovered a fumble for Lafayette (3-2), which travels to Grady next week. Jamaica (2-3) hosts Springfield in Week 6.
Tilden 28, George Washington 12: Sophomore Tyrone Harris had 88 yards rushing and a touchdown and also came up with two interceptions to lead Tilden (4-1), which hosts Columbus in Week 6. Shawn Brathwaite was 6-of-11 passing for a touchdown and also rushed for a score, Roberto Maurice had 99 rushing yards and a touchdown and Jasper Gomes had nine tackles. GW (1-4) travels to Automotive next week.
Mott Haven 32, Automotive 20: Joseph Garcia had 96 rushing yards and a touchdown and Arbely Soto added 95 yards on the ground with a score and a 75-yard kickoff return to the house to lead Mott Haven (2-3), which travels to Long Island City next week. Cameo Cummings rushed for a touchdown, had 10 tackles and a sack. Matthew Tirado followed with an interception and Hancel Cabrera added a sack. Automotive (0-5) heads to George Washington in Week 6.
August Martin 35, Springfield Gardens 16: Ricky Dunbar rushed for a touchdown, threw to Alton Young for a score and took an interception back to pay dirt for Martin (3-2), which hosts Beach Channel next week. Clinton Westmoreland had 106 yards on 14 carries with a touchdown and Roger Cox had 97 yards on 10 carries and a score. Layquane Ezeigwe had nine tackles, two for a loss, and a sack and fumble recovery. Kendell Calhoun had six tackles, two for a loss, and a sack. Springfield Gardens (0-5) heads to Jamaica in Week 6.
Bayside 28, Long Island City 0: Richard Vaughan ran for two touchdowns, Tim Capers had a rushing score and Wendell O’Brien returned an interception to pay dirt for Bayside (5-0), which travels to Madison next week. Long Island City (1-4) hosts Mott Haven in Week 6.
CUP DIVISION
Stuyvesant 41, Adlai Stevenson 8: Cooper Weaver and Elias Weinraub each had a rushing TD, Alen Makhmudov completed 7-of-14 passes for 108 yards and a 31-yard scoring strike to Werner Zhanay and Nathaniel Biggs had five tackles, three for losses, and returned an interception to the house for Stuyvesant, which is 3-2 and faces KIPP NYC College Prep on Oct. 22 at Mott Haven at 3 p.m. Winless Stevenson is 0-4 and visits Lane in Week 6.
South Shore 36, William Bryant 8: Rayon Jeffrey ran for 130 yards and two touchdowns, Matt Sampton added 135 yards on the ground and a score, Equan Yunus and Timothy Wallace each scored on the ground once apiece and Shaheed Farrell made a team-high eight tackles for South Shore (3-1), which hosts Far Rockaway next Saturday at 11 a.m. Bryant is now 2-3 and meets KIPP NYC College Prep at Mott Haven at 1:30 p.m.
Cardozo 22, KIPP NYC College Prep 14: Fabian Bramwell ran for 135 yards and a touchdown, Nevin Williams returned a touchdown to the house and Daniel Pottinger had five tackles and a sack for Cardozo. The Judges (2-3) take on Smith in Week 6. Sebastian Nartey ran for a score for KIPP (0-4), which is still looking for its first varsity win and hosts William Bryant next Saturday at Mott Haven at 1:30 p.m.
McKee/Staten Island Tech 42, Lane 6: Manny Johnson ran for 102 yards and two TDs and caught a 31-yard touchdown pass from Thomas Ferranola, Ivan Cooper picked up 117 yards and a score and Ferranola and Charles D’Onigbinde also scored on the ground for undefeated MSIT (5-0), which hosts Info Tech next Saturday at noon. Lane (3-2) takes on Stevenson in Week 6.
Smith 24, Petrides 7: James Goff threw for 134 yards and hit Aaron Acevedo and Anafieu Tejan on touchdown passes and Marcus Billups and Kevin Gonzalez each scored on the ground for Smith (4-1), which has won two in a row and hosts Cardozo next Saturday at 11 a.m. Joe Henry ran for 115 yards on just 14 carries and Dean Ferrezza hot Matt Kralik on a 25-yard TD pass for Petrides. The Panthers fall to 3-1 and will face Evander Childs in Week 6.
