The 11th-seeded Bayside boys soccer team puts its late-season troubled behind with an impressive opening-round, 8-2 home win over No. 22 New Dorp of Staten Island to kick off the PSAL Class A playoffs.

JP Bello scored twice and added an assist, Andrew Levy had a goal and three helpers and Sanawullah Shairzai had a hat trick, tripling his regular-season amount. Sophomore keeper Constantine Pougiouklidis, healthy after missing the last three games, made eight saves.

“I thought we played very well,” Bayside coach Joe Corrado said. “We got goals from guys who don’t necessarily usually score goals. It was an all-around effort. We moved the ball well.”

Corrado said the slide late in the year was much ado about nothing. The loss to Cardozo on Columbus Day came with several starters missing in action. The setback to John Bowne was a case of several missed opportunities.
