It was just a few hours after Erasmus Hall’s 32-14 victory against winless Grady that Dutchmen coach Danny Landberg started thinking about next week.
On Friday, Erasmus (8-0) meets Tottenville in its stiffest test of the season under the lights in Huguenot. Not only are the Pirates the best team the Dutchmen will have faced all year, the conditions in front of what is sure to be a huge crowd will be a telling test.
“Our kids might look at it as a slap in the face,” Landberg said of the typically ornery Tottenville crowd. “At the same time we might be overwhelmed. We can’t practice for that as much as you’d like to.”
Shaquell Jackson had 150 yards on 13 carries with a pair of touchdowns for the Dutchmen. Jauvan John had 89 yards on four carries with a score and Jonathan Yearwood had 10 tackles, four for a loss, and a sack on defense. Quarterback Wayne Morgan played sparingly, but still picked up 75 yards on six carries with a touchdown.
“Wayne’s been a bit banged up,” Landberg said.
The coach thinks it’ll be his defense – not his team’s vaunted offense – that will be vital against Tottenville. The Dutchmen’s offense, he said, has been prone to mistakes lately in three straight games that were closer than expected.
“I think we have a very good defense and the defense has created a lot of opportunities for our offense,” Landberg said.
Lincoln 26, Midwood 0: Doug Butler ran for a touchdown and returned a fumble for a score to lead Lincoln (5-3). Andrew Vital scored on a quarterback sneak and Bertrand Jean returned an interception for a touchdown. The Railsplitters forced nine turnovers – six interceptions and three fumbles. Midwood is 4-4.
Sheepshead Bay 34, Brooklyn Tech 13: Naquan Alexander had 174 yards on 11 carries with four touchdowns to lead Sheepshead (5-3). Kyle Cook, Guyvans Philogene and David Dyce all had sacks for the Sharks. Brooklyn Tech is 5-3.
New Utrecht 29, Grand Street Campus 0: Davon Collins rushed for 141 yards on 14 carries with one touchdown to lead New Utrecht (5-3). Jordan Paul was 10-of-15 passing for 197 yards, a touchdown and also scored twice on the ground. Curtis Smith caught seven balls for 152 yards and a score.
On defense, Duvall Hinds, Owen Salim and Luis Rivera had interceptions. Mergim Demhasaj and Nico Napoleoni recovered fumbles. Grand Street is 3-5.
Curtis 44, Bayside 6: Shaquan Coles returned a kickoff 85 yards to the house, ran for 141 yards and two scores, and Jevon Gardner also found pay dirt twice for Curtis (6-2). Bayside lost its third straight to fall to 1-7.
Fort Hamilton 41, Canarsie 8: AJ Richardson rushed for three touchdowns, Frank Laino threw two touchdown passes to Brandon Reddish, and the Tigers defense had seven sacks for Fort Hamilton (8-0), who extended its regular-season winning streak to 22 games. Canarsie has lost three straight and is now 3-5.
DeWitt Clinton 45, Lehman 12: Joaquin DeJesus had two rushing touchdowns and threw an 80-yard score to Joseph Flores, Onell Dishmey had 60 yards on the ground and a score, and Alanzo Merchant also ran one in for DeWitt Clinton (7-1). Lehman fell to 4-4.
Boys & Girls 24, James Madison 8: The Kangaroos (2-6) snapped a five-game losing streak by scoring a touchdown in each of the first three quarters. Kevin Francis rushed for Madison’s only score, as the Knights fell to 1-7.
BOWL DIVISION
Jamaica 16, South Shore 0: Terrence Titus had a 40-yard rushing touchdown and Dillon Charles scored on a quarterback sneak to lead Jamaica (2-5). Marc Telemaque forced a safety. South Shore is 0-7.
FDR 16, Springfield Gardens 8: Bryan Joseph rushed for 198 yards on 15 carries with a touchdown to lead FDR (4-4). Eric Phillipeua was 4-of-5 for 75 yards and a touchdown and Andrew Franco had a sack for the Cougars.
Emanuel Evans rushed for 250 yards on 30 carries and Kyle Martin had a rushing score for Springfield Gardens (2-5).
CUP DIVISION
Lafayette 6, Far Rockaway 0: Quarterback Jhaleel Fenelon scored the game’s only touchdown on a two-yard keeper and Nick Natal made a team-high 12 tackles and had an interception for Lafayette (2-6). Far Rockaway (3-5) has dropped three in a row.
George Washington 30, Alfred E. Smith 8: Ernest Matos hauled in a touchdown pass from Corley Woods and also ran for 90 yards on eight carries and scored twice for George Washington (4-4). Olsin Maxwell rushed for 217 yards and Victor Jerez scored on the ground for the Trojans. Smith is 3-5.
Automotive 16, Petrides 8: Maurice Edwards completed 7-of-11 passes for 187 yards and tossed touchdown passes to James Clark and Zorey Lewis for Automotive (8-0), who kept pace with undefeated South Bronx atop the Cup Division. Petrides (6-2) had its two-game winning streak snapped.
South Bronx 50, Stuyvesant 0: Michael Walker hit on 9-of-11 passes for 110 yards and threw touchdown passes to Luis Sanchez and Rafelito Mercedez for South Bronx (8-0), who scored 22 first-quarter points. Michael Drake Jr., Devonte Arthur, Andrae Simpson and Demetrix Carraway each scored on the ground for the Phoneix. Stuyvesant is 2-7.
Info Tech 40, Adlai Stevenson 34: Chris Bohan threw for 119 yards and a touchdown pass, ran for two scores and Chris Change, who also had 13 tackles and a sack, found the end zone on the ground for Info Tech (6-2), who won its second straight. Adlai Stevenson fell to 3-5 after its three-game winning streak was snapped.
