The Puerto Rico Islanders’ dream run through the CONCACAF Champions League came to a crashing, gut-wrenching halt last night, as the USL minnow essentially blew a two-goal lead in their semifinal.
Leading Mexican power Cruz Azul by two goals on aggregate, the Islanders got a break when Cruz Azul midfielder Christian Riveros picked up a first-half red card. But like the Red Bulls Sunday in Chicago, the man advantage went to waste. Pablo Zeballos and Javier Orozco scored for Cruz Azul, who went on to knock out the Islanders in penalty kicks.
Did you see the game on FSC? What do you think of Puerto Rico’s stunning run to the semis? Impressed at what the USL accomplished, along with the way Montreal acquitted themselves? Talk to us…
