Rays manager Joe Maddon could see Alex Rodriguez’s 600th career home run in person this weekend when his team plays the Yankees at Tropicana Field.
But Maddon doesn’t think it’s as big a deal as it could have been.
“Because of all the subplots involved, I think that’s why you’re not getting as much of a buildup,” Maddon said, according to Tampabay.com. “I don’t think that it’s worn off. I think when (the Twins’) Jim Thome arrives nearer that point, you’re going to see the same kind of previous buildup, I believe, as an example.
“I think based on the revelations of the last couple years, I think it probably detracts from it a bit.”
Prior to the 2009 season, the Yankees third baseman admitted to using a substance called “boli” when he was with the Rangers, for whom he hit 156 homers from 2001-03.
Rodriguez has been chasing No. 600 for almost a week now, going 30 at-bats since 599, the longest drought for any of the seven players trying for that milestone.
Rodriguez, long expected to be able to eventually pass Barry Bonds’ all-time total of 762, has 16 homers this season.
Thome has 576 home runs.
