The Red Bulls have given ex-Serbian National Team striker Veljko Paunovic an idea how much money they have to offer him, and I’m told it’s not much. I’m also told by sporting director Jeff Agoos that signing the 31-year-old la Liga veteran is a “longshot.”

“We’ve had a couple email exchanges but nothing substantial. My feeling is right now it’s more of a longshot than anything. But we’ve left everything on good terms and we’re continuing our discussions,” Agoos said. “A formal offer is the league presenting a contract and that never happened. We talked generally in terms of money, but nothing too specific.

“This wasn’t really even a Plan A. He sort of fell on our doorstep, so to speak. He walked in the league office and said I’m interested in playing and we happened to get a lead on it; so this sort of fell in our laps.” Paunovic left an impression on a couple of the Red Bulls, with longtime la Liga foe Albert Celades stumping for the Serb. Captain Juan Pablo Angel was measured in his praise of Ernst Obster, qualiifying things by saying he only saw him a few days in practice, so you never know; but with Paunovic, he wasn’t at all reserved in his praise.

“I like him. You could tell he has ability. He has been playing in Spain for a number of years and different European leagues and you could tell he has the ability not only to play the game but to score goals,” Angel said today. “He’s a player that could add experience and quality to the team.”

But maybe not at a price they can afford? I mean, I saw him in practice, and he can flat-out finish. Maybe not win a 100-meter dash, but he can do the thing they need done. And he walked in the league door looking to play. You’d figure they could clear up enough cash to make it worth his while _ although I admit I have no idea what his salary demands are….
