The Red Bulls’ weeklong trials of Bouna Coundoul and Ernst Obster both ended today, but the club neither signed nor ruled out either player. Both are still in play, and coach Juan Carlos Osorio added that he’d love to sign an academy player this summer as well.

With Danny Cepero having a leg up in seizing the starting goalkeeper position, Coundoul needed to at least beat out deposed starter Jon Conway, if not Cepero as well to get signed. But the 27-year-old Bronx resident sprained his ankle Thursday in practice, and the club hasn’t seen enough of him to make a decision yet. Coundoul _ who got capped for Senegal in the 2007 African Cup of Nations _ looked good when I saw him Wednesday in practice, and I’m told he was looking more active than Conway yesterday. Tough break for him; but the roster guarantee date isn’t until July 1, so he has time.

As far as Obster, the team is still very interested in him, but they couldn’t do anything with him anyway until the summer window opens July 15 so the left-winger is on a plane back to Austria Sunday.

Some people have asked me what’s going on at left wing, and if the Red Bulls have any interest in Rohan Ricketts. I’m told they’re not going after the Toronto castoff, so I’m assuming that’s how things stand at the moment.

In other news, the Red Bulls have had a small army of their youth players training with them recently. Part of that is due to injuries to the big club, but it’s mostly because Osorio hopes to sign one this summer, and wants to take a good long look at the best of the lot. I’ll have more on that later.
