JPA will be spanking MLS bottoms for years Angel debuted in 2007 with a 19-goal campaign in just 24 games, named MLS Best XI. He broke fellow Colombian Adolfo Valencia’s club record of 16 tallies and was a finalist for the MLS MVP and Newcomer of the Year award, but he may actually have been more impressive last year. He missed seven games due to back injury, but mustered an Eastern Conference-leading 14 goals and captained the Red Bulls to their first MLS Cup final.

“We’re thrilled to have come to an agreement with Juan Pablo,” Red Bull managing director Erik Stover said in a release. “During his two years in New York, Juan Pablo has established himself as the top forward in the League. He has shown a tremendous commitment to this club both on and off the field. We’re excited to have him lead our team in the coming years as we compete for a MLS Cup championship.”

The 33-year-old Angel leads all league players in goals scored over the past two years, and is just nine goals shy of breaking the club record. He was already under contract for this coming season, but with the news that this is a MULTI-YEAR extension, that means he’ll not only see the opening of Red Bull Arena in 2010, but play at least 2011 as well.
