Stronach Stable’s Red Bullet, recent winner of the Grade 3 Gotham and undefeated in three starts, came out of his four-furlong workout Friday morning in good order, according to trainer Joe Orseno. He went four furlongs in :46, breezing over the Belmont training track, with exercise rider Keith Ricks up.
The workout was a bullet, the fastest of 34 at the distance. Red Bullet went in fractions of :11 2/5 and :22 2/5, and galloped out in :59 and 1:13 3/5, with “plenty left” according to NYRA clockers.
Trainer John Kimmel has confirmed that Country Only, winner of the Count Fleet and Whirlaway here at Aqueduct during the winter, will be pointed towards the Wood Memorial. Country Only breezed five furlongs over the Belmont training track in :59 3/5, with jockey Heberto Castillo Jr. in the irons.
Norberto Arroyo Jr. took off his mounts as his ankle was still swollen from being dumped after the sixth race on Friday. He hopes to return to the races today.
1ST RACE — Strike Three was sent off as the favorite, but his backers had something to worry about at the start when Battle Cry bore out and bumped him hard. Battle Cry was rank while battling for the early lead and Richard Migliore got Strike Three to relax behind the pacesetters. On the turn, Migliore waited patiently as Battle Cry started to bear out again. Entering the stretch, Strike Three had a huge opening to go through and he drew away for an easy victory. Linus was last early and then moved up on the rail on the far turn. John Velazquez angled him wide for the stretch drive and he raced greenly, switching leads constantly and weaving in and out, but he closed well to gain the place spot.
2ND RACE — Pauline Forkhamer, making her first start since injuring her hand in a spill at Finger Lakes last year, came up the rail and won on the 20-1 Bill Mott-trained Satchmo’s Band. This was the sixth career victory for Forkhamer, who made her riding debut in September. She was supposed to ride at the inner track meet but spent the winter recovering from the injury. She is scheduled to begin riding at Delaware Park next week when its meet starts.
3RD RACE — Tiger Ridge is a full brother to A.P. Indy and Summer Squall that is trained by Shug McGaughey and ridden by Jerry Bailey. He finished fourth in his career debut at Gulfstream, but with those connections and breeding, he was sent off the even-money favorite for his route debut. But he rated off the pace, and when asked for run on the turn, he came up empty and finished sixth. First-time starter Silent West was last early but then made a strong run on the outside to gain the place spot.
4TH RACE — First-time starter Sweetie rated off the pace and was well behind the leaders at the top of the stretch. Jorge Chavez then angled her outside and, despite racing greenly through the stretch, she closed well to gain the place spot. Robbie Davis replaced Arroyo on Dame Edna and he split Besttwobelong and Concorde Lady to gain the lead and go on for the victory. Alice Nevada made a strong run on the far turn to reach contention but then hung in the stretch.
5TH RACE — Fourth and Six trailed the field early and then angled inside while running down the backstretch. Tracking then angled outside of Fourth and Six and remained there entering the far turn. The two raced as a tandem, but then Fourth and Six had to wait until Tracking started his move before he could angle outside to make his move. Fourth and Six got to the outside in the stretch and closed well but could not catch Maybe Jack before the wire. Favored Guaranteed set the pace but tired badly to finish last.
7TH RACE — Cloud Club rated off the pace while saving ground and then angled out slightly when turning for home. First Emperor was moving well on the rail and went on even terms with Cloud Club when they straightened out in the lane. The two ran as a tandem together and then First Emperor had to duck inside to avoid the tiring Pleasant Prince. First Emperor got through on the rail, but Cloud Club had a clear run in the stretch and outdueled First Emperor for the victory.
9TH RACE — Appealing Danger stalked the early pace set by Light Craft. He was under a hard hold by Diane Nelson as he waited for a hole to open up. In the stretch, Nelson angled Appealing Danger sharply to the rail where the tiring Cellular Joe was and went through a narrow opening inside Light Craft. Appealing Danger then showed his class and drew away for the victory.
