The Red Bulls have reportedly hired former Chivas USA head coach Robin Fraser to be Mike Petke’s top assistant. The move is made all the more important with the young Petke making his first foray into head coaching at the helm of a star-studded, expensive win now roster rife with huge egos and high expectations.
The Post was the first to report Fraser was a candidate last week, and Soccer By Ives reported his hiring today.
The Jamaican-born Fraser was fired as Chivas USA coach after two seasons, the latter ending on a 14-game winless streak. But the former U.S. National Team defender and MLS Best XI standout was regarded as a top assistant with Real Salt Lake, and should provide both tactical awareness for a struggling defense and some veteran knowledge for an inexperienced head coach.
Veteran Portuguese coach Paulo Sousa had agreed to take the head coaching job, but the Post reported that he was denied a work permit, throwing the coaching search for a loop. Having already failed to land their No. 1 choice for a lead assistant when Claudio Reyna backed out, the coaching search appeared in abysmal disarray.
But Red Bulls sporting director Andy Roxburgh stood firm in his conviction that the team needed a coach familiar with MLS, and tabbed Petke. Now he’s reportedly added Fraser to be his right hand man.
