The Red Bulls signed rookie draft pick Nick Zimmerman yesterday, and he played in the reserves’ 0-0 draw with the USL Portland Timbers.

The 22-year-old Zimmerman was a third-round pick out of James Madison, where he led his team in goals (6) and assists (5) as a midfielder. The 6-0, 184-lb. Tampa (Fl) native impressed in camp and earned a developmental contract

Earlier on Friday, Portland was named as the 18th MLS team. Zimmerman and Luke Sassano helped the Red Bulls keep possession, but they couldn’t muster a goal.

Here is the Red Bulls’ starting XI for the reserve tilt: Jon Conway (Alec Dufty 63), Danleigh Borman, Andrew Boyens, Carlos Johnson, Jeremy Hall (Seth Stammler 46), Luke Sassano, Khano Smith, Nick Zimmerman, Matthew Mbuta, John Wolyniec, Dominic Oduro.

To make room on the roster for Zimmerman, the Red Bulls waived second-year midfielder Michael Palacio. The ex-Stony Brook standout was a second-round pick in last year’s Supplemental Draft, but lost most of his rookie campaign when went on the Season-Ending Injury List after an April 20 knee injury.
