LONDON — Renault has appointed Bob Bell as temporary new head of its Formula One in the aftermath of one of the sport’s biggest scandals.

Bell is a former technical director. He replaces Flavio Briatore, who left the team amid allegations by Nelson Piquet Jr. that he was ordered to crash at last year’s Singapore Grand Prix to help teammate Fernando Alonso win.

Renault received a suspended ban from the sport at a hearing in Paris on Monday. Briatore was banned indefinitely from F1. Renault said in a statement yesterday that Bell also will act as chief technical officer. Jean-Francois Caubet takes over as managing director.
