ProFootballTalk.com reports “a meeting between (Roger) Goodell and (Plaxico) Burress is expected to occur during the week of August 3” and that a grand jury has been convened regarding gun charges against the former Giants star.

The Web site says, “According to Alicia Maxey Greene, a spokeswoman for the Manhattan District Attorney’s office, a grand jury has convened regarding the matter.” The grand jury was expected to convene by the end of the month, but the Web site says Goodell and Burress planned to meet regardless whether or not the case moved along.

Burress accidentally shot himself in the leg in late November 2008.

The Web site says, “The [NFL] office previously has disclosed that Commissioner Roger Goodell is reviewing the Burress case, a sign that Burress likely will be suspended even before the charges against him are resolved.”

The commissioner has three options regarding Burress, writer Mike Florio speculates:

(1) suspend Burress indefinitely, until the case is concluded and any jail time is served;

(2) impose a finite suspension, under the assumption that he’ll eventually plead guilty or be convicted of something in connection with the open-and-shut case;

or (3) announce that no suspension will be imposed until the case is concluded.

The Jets admitted interest in the wide receiver after he was released by the Giants, but they seemingly have backed off as the case went unresolved.

Burress faces up to 3-1/2 years in prison if convicted.
