U.S. National Team pool midfielder Freddy Adu will head back to Portuguese club Benfica at the end of the season, according to Portuguese sports daily Record. The 19-year-old is on loan at AC Monaco, but the move is hardly shocking, for a host of reasons. One, Adu has played only nine times since arriving last July. Two, AS Monaco president Jérôme de Bontin resigned several months ago, and the French-American had openly talked about “Americanizing” les Rouge et Blanc and championing Adu.

And three _ the most important _ Adu’s agent Bruno Satin said the cost to buy him would’ve been $6.8 million. That wasn’t likely to happen.

What do you think of Adu going back to Benfica, where he made just 11 appearances his first season? Want to see him buck up and fight for his spot, the way Clint Dempsey did at Fulham? Tired of seeing him bounce from place to place? Think he’ll never fulfil his promise for the U.S. National Team until he gets regular playing time? Share your thoughts….
