Given a chance to do it over, Giants RB Brandon Jacobs says he would’ve had surgery on his injured knee sooner after it happened instead of trying to play on it for most of last season.

Jacobs, injured in the season opener against the Redskins, tells NJ.com, “I would’ve got it done Week 1, missed four or five weeks and came back and played.”

Jacobs said he learned, “Not to play hurt. If something happens to you, no matter what it is, go and get it taken care of. Because things aren’t going to get better.”

Jacobs told writer Mike Garofolo he did not want to make an excuse, but said the injury hindered a season in which he gained 835 yards coming off back-to-back 1,000-yard years.

“I’m not one to make those excuses and blame my non-success on injury,” Jacobs said. “That’s never been me. You guys know that. I’ve never made excuses for anything.”

Jacobs had surgery last month to repair the meniscus and expects to be ready for next season.
