In a story that borders on the cliché, right after 34-year-old English defender Sol Campbell walked out on Notts County, three MLS teams _ including the Red Bulls _ are reportedly interested in signing him.
The Daily Mail says New York, the expansion Philadelphia Union and the Galaxy _ with ex-England teammate David Beckham _ want to land Campbell this winter. Take it for what its worth folks, and that ain’t much _ at least as far as the Red Bulls are concerned. As far as the the Union and Galaxy, I have no idea; but a source tells me he isn’t likely to be playing in New York in 2010.
Agents _ especially ones for over-the-hill Premiership players _ love nothing more than to hold MLS, and particularly New York, as trump cards over perspective bidders. I assume none of them have a clue about the little, and I mean little, thing called the MLS salary cap. But hey, the Galaxy have worked wonders cobbling a team around those two huge salaries, so one never knows, do one?
On that note, do you buy any of this? I mean, in no alternate universe is he a Designated Player. Those of you still bitter over Claudio Reyna would storm the Red Bull offices with torches and pitchforks. Sure, they clearly need a top-flight centerback. And yes, they might be interested if he could be had for, say, HALF the price of a DP; but I don’t think they are, and I’m pretty sure he can’t, so as far as I’ve heard you can cut that down to two MLS suitors…if that.
What do you think? Figure there’s any truth to it? Think he’ll stay in England, in a lower-division club? Or since he’s repeatedly said he wants to be an actor, do you assume he’s headed to join Goldenballs in L.A? Holla at us….
