The Red Sox have agreed to a one-year, $10 million contract with free agent third baseman Adrian Beltre, according to multiple reports.

Beltre’s deal includes a player option for a second season for $5 million and a $1 million buyout if the chooses to leave. The Red Sox had attempted to deal Mike Lowell previous to signing Beltre, but a deal with the Rangers fell through because of an injury to their reigning third baseman.

ESPN.com reports that the Red Sox have had talks with the Mets about a Lowell for Luis Castillo trade, but that several obstacles stand in the way of that being completed.

Beltre hit .265 with eight home runs and 44 RBIs in 111 games for the Mariners last season.
