The 30-year-old may not be anywhere near as accomplished as his more famous cousin, but the Red Bulls’ front office has been clear about what it’s been looking for: A proven, veteran midfielder capable of calming the team, controlling the game and available on a free transfer. Coach Hans Backe said he can find just that because of his connections: And he has one with Suazo.
Suazo made a name for himself at Red Bull Salzburg, arriving in 2000 _ while Backe was coaching the squad. Suazo went on to play 114 games for the club and be named Footballer of the Year in the Austrian Bundesliga in 2004, before being sold to Antalyaspor two years later for €800.000.
He made 27 appearances that season for the Turkish side, before going to 2.Bundesliga outfit FC Köln. The first Honduran to play in Germany, he helped Cologne to promotion _ but was probably better known for his headbutt on Sejad Salihovic.
After a brief stint back in Honduras with Club Deportivo Marathón _ where he helped then to last year’s CONCACAF Champions League but suffered a knee injury _ he’s been out of contract.
