Rightly So, the 3-1 morning-line favorite for today’s Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint at Churchill Downs, was scratched Friday morning after being examined by the Breeders’ Cup Veterinary Panel, which determined that she was lame.

“[The veterinarians] came back to the barn and they looked at her again,” trainer Tony Dutrow said. “They were not happy with the way she was moving and said they would not allow her to run.”

Rightly So, a gate-to-wire winner of the Grade 1 Ballerina in her last start, was the likely pacesetter again in the Filly & Mare Sprint.

Crown of Thorns, second choice at 4-1 for tomorrow’s Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile, was withdrawn from the race Friday morning by Hall of Fame trainer Richard Mandella following a “flare-up of an old injury.”

Mandella noticed a problem with the 5-year-old son of Repent when Crown of Thorns was cooling out after galloping Thursday morning.

“There was some heat in his [right front] knee, and we checked it and it turns out it was a flare-up of an old injury,” Mandella said. “He’s had an issue with that knee for the past few years, and it has come back. It’s nothing real serious, not a fracture or anything like that. But coming up to a race like this there’s just no way you could think about running him given the circumstances.”
