DALLAS – Rockets owner Les Alexander came over from Houston with his general manager, Carroll Dawson, last night hoping to meet with Jeff Van Gundy after the Spurs-Mavericks game.

Evidently the Rockets received permission from the Knicks to speak with Van Gundy about their head-coaching vacancy. Van Gundy, who also is being considered for the Cleveland job, is under contract with the Knicks until the end of July.

Van Gundy is right there on the Rockets’ short list. Larry Brown, should he leave the Sixers, also would be considered as will Mike Dunleavy. Sources say Brown is going to meet with Sixers owner Ed Snider today or tomorrow. Brown has two years left on his Philly contract, but indications are he is leaning toward leaving. Sources say the Sixers would let him walk away from his contract if he wants.
