We enter this year’s Royal Rumble with plenty of possibilities and numerous logical paths WWE can take to WrestleMania 35. You could even say, it will be hard to screw this one up.

It’s expected some combination of Ronda Rousey, Becky Lynch and Charlotte Flair will be in the potential main event match at MetLife Stadium on April 7. How does WWE get there with Rousey facing Sasha Banks for the Raw women’s championship, Lynch taking on Asuka for SmackDown’s belt and Flair making her Royal Rumble debut?

On the men’s side, Roman Reigns main evented WrestleMania the past four years and with him away battling leukemia, that spot against Brock Lesnar or Finn Balor is open. While a curveball is always possible, there are plenty of places WWE can turn to fill it.

Here are five things to watch for at Chase Field in Phoenix on Sunday as the pieces of the WrestleMania puzzle start to fall into place:

Will the “best tag team in the world” see their quest for the SmackDown titles end in turmoil or triumph? WWE has poured a lot of TV time into the partnership between The Miz and Shane McMahon. How soon will this tandem be broken up, especially with McMahon having duties technically running two shows? Either way, their segments likely won’t end until WrestleMania, but will they be friends or foes?

While Brock Lesnar and Finn Balor will be in the ring for the Universal championship match, Braun Strowman is part of this story, too. After losing his place in the match, he was part of segment to set up Balor-Lesnar on “Monday Night Raw” last week. Will Strowman get involved in the match? Will he win the Royal Rumble?

This is also a big stage for Balor and he can really help his push with a good match versus Lesnar. He’s called it “a pleasure” to work with bigger guys like the Universal champion. A win for Finn means a potentially huge 2019 for the Irishman and maybe a shift in WWE’s philosophy.

The “new” Daniel Bryan has been a hit as a tree-hugging, planet-loving heel. He even took time to make fun of the special Royal Rumble burger being offered at Chase Field. He has gone back to being “Mr. Small Package” to win matches since turning heel. Will Styles have a counter for it this time or will Bryan strike again? These two have a chance to build a memorable rivalry if the feud and Bryan’s character continue to grow.

Sure there are favorites to win in Seth Rollins, Braun Strowman or Drew McIntyre. But why can’t there be a SmackDown surprise in Andrade, Rey Mysterio or Samoa Joe. Andrade and Mysterio would be fresh, fun matches with Bryan or Styles. Do we get a Kevin Owens return or a Lars Sullivan debut?

The pre-match booking certainly makes it appear the winner will come from Raw. Rollins and Strowman work well will Lesnar or Balor, but McIntyre would be a better fit with the babyface Balor. There are not a lot wrong answers here for WWE, but that doesn’t mean they will pick a right one.

The women’s division enters the Royal Rumble with the most excitement and intrigue. How do you cross brands and logically get Rousey, Lynch and Flair to WrestleMania. A returning Alexa Bliss is certainly a wild card, but using her to build drama is more likely.

It’s unlikely Rousey will lose her championship before then — especially with reports she will take time away from WWE to start a family after WrestleMania. So now, it’s about booking the other two.

WWE can have Lynch or Flair win the Rumble and have the other force her way into the match. Flair doing the latter would bring the story full circle to SummerSlam or Lynch would need to overcome more odds to truly be The Man. The other possibility is the Bret Hart/Lex Luger finish where Flair and Lynch — who would lose to Asuka — are battling each other so fiercely they go over and land at the same time. Whatever happens will be fascinating.

Hideo Itami over Buddy Murphy (c.), Kalisto, Akira Tozawa and Hideo Itami (Cruiserweight Championship)

Murphy has been champion since Super Show-Down in October. What better place to shake up the division then on one of the year’s biggest shows.

Rusev (c.) over Shinsuke Nakamura (United States championship)

WWE barely used Nakamura when he had the belt, so it doesn’t make sense to take it off the fan-favorite Rusev — especially if a heel Bryan is on top of SmackDown.

Shane McMahon and The Miz over The Bar (c.) (SmackDown tag team championships)

WWE has invested a lot into the Shane-Miz team for them not to win. They have a short reign that leads to a WrestleMania tag match or a singles one against each other.

Asuka (c.) over Becky Lynch (SmackDown women’s championship)

The belt needs to stay with Asuka. Charlotte already put herself in the middle of the feud this week on SmackDown. She could be a catalyst for a DQ finish.

Ronda Rousey (c.) over Sasha Banks (Raw women’s championship)

Rousey needs to get to WrestleMania unscathed in the record book, but Banks will push her to her limit in a fierce, emotional match. Banks likely has tag team titles with Bayley in her future.

Daniel Bryan (c.) over AJ Styles to retain the WWE Championship

Bryan’s heel turn is just beginning and off to a great start, no reason to take the belt off him now. He’s already told us he is going to be champion forever.

Brock Lesnar (c.) over Finn Balor (Universal championship)

Finn’s time will come, it just won’t be in Phoenix. Lesnar, thanks to a desperate F5, will head to WrestleMania as champion so we can hear the whispers or him taking the belt to the UFC again.

Charlotte Flair wins the women’s Royal Rumble

Alexa Bliss and a women’s legend or Ember Moon will be in the final four with Lynch and Flair, who would have cost her friend the title earlier in the night. Lynch and Flair will go over together, but Lynch will land first. Stacking the deck against Lynch is the best story.

Seth Rollins wins the men’s Royal Rumble

Even after a dismal feud with Dean Ambrose, Rollins has been put in the Roman Reigns spot on Raw. He’s the clear best option for a great WrestleMania match no matter who is champion.
