The moment seemed all too perfect for Laura Montalto. The Preston star senior was heading to the plate as the winning run with no outs in her final home game against Maria Regina. It was almost too good to be true that coach Rachel Mazza thought her chance was going to be taken away.

“I was surprised they pitched to her,” Mazza said. “I wouldn’t have.”

But Montalto had been struggling and was frustrated. She felt in her other times at bat she was trying to hit a homer and ended up just popping the ball up. Before stepping to the plate in the seventh she had a talk with assistant coach Alex Mazza, Rachel’s daughter, who told her to calm down and stop being anxious.

“I finally relaxed myself at the last at bat,” said Montalto, a four-year starter.

And finally hit the home run she was looking for all game.

She drove a pitch over the left center field fence for a three-run blast that gave Preston a 7-6 walk-off win against Maria Regina Monday at Bicentennial Veterans Memorial Park. Maria Regina beat the Panthers in their previous two meetings.

“It felt good off the bat,” said Montalto, who will play at Manhattanville next fall. “It was kind of a higher pitch so it felt like it was going to be a good hit.”

Preston (9-4), ranked No. 8 in the CHSAA by The Post, held a 4-1 lead after a three-run fourth. Senior Asia Spivey drove in Franki Primiani and Krista Rinaldi with a single and Melissa Santiago singled her home. Maria Regina answered with five runs, including two on passed balls, in the fifth to grab a 6-4 lead.

Spivey led a strong day for the Preston seniors and Rinaldi moved from second to short to take over for the injured Jessica Signore. Junior Kitty Lagqui drove in a run in the first. Santiago, who turned a double play at second, and freshman Sabrina D’Ancona led off the seventh with singles to set up Montalto’s game-ending blast that got her mobbed at home plate by her teammates.

“I got attacked really bad,” Montalto said. “I was getting thrown around.”
