It took Inter just five minutes to build a 2-0 lead at home over Napoli Wednesday night to grab a 3-1 victory and first place in Serie A — replacing previously undefeated Sampdoria, who lost 2-0 on the road to Fiorentina.
Striker Samuel Eto’o scored the first goal after just two minutes and Diego Milito beat the offside trap just three minutes later to net his fifth in five league games this season.
“We had a fantastic first half. We’ve won and played well,” Milito told Sky Italia after the game.
Brazilian defender Lucio nodded in Inter’s third goal in the 31st minute off a corner, then Napoli striker Ezequiel Lavezzi pulled one back later in the half for Roberto Donadoni’s embattled side, who have picked up just four points so far.
Inter played without coach Jose Mourinho on the bench after he was forced to serve a one-match ban after being thrown out of a game this past weekend.
As a result of the win, Inter suprassed Sampdoria (who they play this Saturday) when headers from Stevan Jovetic and Alberto Gilardino sealed Fiorentina’s 2-0 win.
Inter currently have 13 points, while Juventus (who play Genoa on Thursday) and Sampdoria are in second place with 12 each.
AC Milan’s inconsistent start, meanwhile, continued to haunt them following a 1-0 loss at Udinese, where striker Antonio Di Natale scored in the first half.
In Sicily, Francesco Totti converted a late penalty kick to give AS Roma a thrilling 3-3 draw at Palermo under a heavy rain that hampered play the entire game.
